What Are Sea Marks? Learn the Sea Marks and Navigate Safely

What Are Sea Marks?

A sea mark is a fixed or floating sign used to indicate safe passages or warn of dangers. They are part of the international IALA system, which means they work the same way almost everywhere in the world.

Types of sea marks include:

  • Lateral marks (red and green) showing which side to steer.
  • Cardinal marks (black and yellow) showing which side is safe to pass.
  • Special marks (yellow) marking specific areas like swimming zones.
  • Isolated danger marks (black/red with two black spheres on top).

Learn the Sea Marks

It may feel overwhelming at first, but memory tricks make it easier:

  • “Red on starboard when heading north or into harbor.”
  • Cardinal marks point the way – the cones on top show the safe side.
  • Yellow means: “Something special here – check the chart.”

Practice makes perfect, and soon reading sea marks will feel natural.

Summary

Sea marks are the sea’s own language – they keep you safe and guide you away from trouble.

And remember: At Ship O’Hoi, we make it easy to enjoy life at sea – whether you rent a boat, jet ski, or kayak. With knowledge of sea marks, your adventure becomes both safer and more fun!
